Random Sand Fact

Can sand hide a boat for almost 200 years?

In Portrush Harbour, Northern Ireland, it did. After powerful storms in 2022 removed large amounts of sand, the remains of an eleven-metre fishing boat appeared.

Archaeologists dated the vessel to the early nineteenth century. Sand had covered and preserved parts of the hull since it was abandoned.

Then the sand covered it again – to keep protecting it.
