Can a sand dune be mistaken for a volcano?
On Lanzarote in Spain, large hills were long interpreted as volcanic formations. But beneath the volcanic material lies something else: fossil sand dunes.
The dunes came first. A later eruption covered them, preserving their shape beneath layers of volcanic material.
