How much do we really value sand?
On Koh Nang Yuan in Thailand, signs read “SOS Save our sands”. Visitors are asked not to place towels directly on the beach because sand gets caught in the fabric and leaves with them.
The signs even do the maths: 100 grams of sand per towel becomes one kilo after just ten visitors. Whether that makes a major difference to the beach is another question. But it says something about how far we are willing to go to keep the sand we came there to enjoy.
