In Yemen, there is a lizard that swims through sand.
It is called a sandfish. One of its species lives in only two countries, and Yemen is one of them.
The lizard has fully developed legs, yet can disappear beneath the surface and move through loose sand almost as if the grains were water.
Below the surface it hunts small prey. Its body is built for life between the grains: a wedge-shaped head, smooth scales and ear openings protected from sand.
