Random Sand Fact
In 1778, a few handfuls of sand helped disable a British fort on Dominica.
On the evening before a French invasion, French sympathisers gained access to Fort Cachacrou. They got the soldiers on duty drunk and then filled the cannons’ touchholes with sand.
When the French attacked the following morning, the guns could not be fired. The fort fell quickly, becoming the first step in the capture of the island.
No explosion. No sophisticated technology. Just sand in exactly the wrong place.
