Random Sand Fact
Can a country store its drinking water in sand?
In Luxembourg, to a large extent, it does. When sand is compacted into sandstone, tiny spaces can remain between the grains. Rainwater can seep into these pores, be stored there and move through the rock.
Around 75 per cent of Luxembourg’s groundwater used for drinking water comes from Luxembourg Sandstone. In many places, the water re-emerges as springs.
