On Nevis, people tell of a whole town that sank into the sea. Archaeologists found its remains under sand.
According to legend, Jamestown disappeared beneath the waves when an earthquake and a tidal wave struck the island. The sea swallowed houses and people. At full moon, the church bells could supposedly still be heard underwater.
When archaeologists excavated the site, they found the remains of buildings on land, beneath sand and soil.
