Random Sand Fact

Once a year, candles are pressed into sand along Uruguay’s beaches.

On 2 February, people honour Iemanjá, goddess of the sea in Afro-Uruguayan religions. Small altars are built in the sand, and the beach fills with singing, drums and offerings.

Flowers, fruit and sometimes jewellery are left before the offerings are carried out towards the water. In several places, participants are now asked to leave only what will not harm the sea or the beach.
