What does one of Africa’s greatest footballers have to do with sand and plastic waste?
In Cameroon, paving stones are made from a mixture of sand and melted plastic. The plastic is sorted and melted, sand is added, and the hot mixture is pressed into moulds. Here, the plastic acts as the binder instead of cement.
The technique is used by Cœur d’Afrique, the foundation created by Cameroonian football legend Roger Milla, where production has also been combined with training young people in recycling.
Plastic that might otherwise become waste binds the grains together into something people can walk on.
