Random Sand Fact

A thing about sand is that it’s difficult to stop once it’s moving. If you want a hard-to-forget example of it, head to Denmark.

The sand in Skagen, the northernmost point in Denmark, creates one of the world’s longest spits and – buries a church. All that is visible of The Old Skagen Church is the whitewashed church tower that sticks up in the sand.

A few hundred years after it was built in the 14th century, sand drifted into the area. A struggle to keep the sand at bay started. Before the church closed for good, sand had to be removed before each service.  The church tower is all you can see of the church once here.

Today it’s a navigational landmark. The altar, the baptismal font, and the floor are likely still there, deep underneath the sand.

Whispers of history echoing through the sand!
