In The Gambia, a game board can begin with 25 holes in sand.
Cokoo is a traditional strategy game still played in The Gambia. A five-by-five grid of holes is dug directly into sand or loose ground.
The playing pieces are sticks inserted into the holes. The players distinguish their pieces by setting the sticks at different angles.
No board needs to be made or carried. Sand becomes the playing surface when the game begins.
