In Iran, people have learned to steer sand with branches.

In Sistan, where strong winds can move large amounts of sand, an old technique known as Teng is used. Tamarisk branches are woven and placed in rows or barriers to slow the wind and redirect drifting sand away from farmland and settlements.

The technique has been used for generations and works on a simple principle: rather than trying to stop every grain, people change how the wind catches the sand and where it settles.

Today, the knowledge is being documented because the tradition is at risk of disappearing.
