Random Sand Fact

Madagascar is world-famous for its lemurs. Some love to sunbathe sitting in a characteristic pose on the sand while others gracefully side-gallop over it.

Another sand-loving animal endemic to Madagascar is the tadpole(baby-stage) of the tree frog Boophis picturatus. What makes it extraordinary is that it eats sand. Its thin almost transparent skin makes it possible to see the many sand grains inside it clearly. Observation of their gut contents indicates that the sand grains aid with digestion.

There’s much to love about sand!
