Random Sand Fact

Eat sand?

In Madagascar, tadpoles of the treefrog Boophis picturatus do exactly that. They live in sandy streams and fill their intestines with grains of sand together with organic matter found among the grains.

Their skin is so thin that the sand can be seen through the body. Researchers examining their gut contents found grains more than a millimetre across.
