Random Sand Fact
In Malta, the sand on its beaches is valued highly enough to have its own protection law.
Since 1949, the Sand (Preservation) Act has regulated the removal of natural sand. Beach sand was once used as a building material, including in Malta’s characteristic patterned cement tiles.
The traditional tiles were made from beach sand, white cement and pigments. In modern production, the beach sand has been replaced by marble powder.
