Sand Origin

Namib desert, south of Swakopmund

Random Sand Fact

The world’s oldest desert, the Namid desert,  stretching along Namibia’s coast, also holds the record of the world’s highest sand dunes.
In the local language, Namib means “an area where there is nothing”. but there’s more than lots of sand here.
  • dunes varying in color from light to dark red due to iron oxide coating
  • a forest frozen in time with blackened tree skeletons trapped in white clay set against red-rusted dunes and a blue sky
  • in a secret dune location: an art installation with six solar-powered speakers endlessly playing Toto’s 1982 hit ‘Africa.’
  • abandoned towns, desert lions, and…
  • a week-long foot race over the dunes… (how about inviting a jewelry-designing sand nerd to join it…? )
Every grain of sand tells a story. To OUAW’s Akin jewelry, featured Namib sand brings both ancient wisdom and thrilling adventures.
