You can still see special sand trays in Daoist temples and at folk shrines and altars.
The spirit-writer uses a stick to write characters believed to be written by communicating spirits. When most popular, during the Ming dynasty, a special sand altar stood and was regularly used in the Forbidden City.
In the past, people used sand writing to predict the future and discuss social problems or the Dao. Nowadays, it’s mainly used for giving spiritual advice for matters regarding relationships, careers, or personal affairs.
