Random Sand Fact

Can sand be used to communicate with spirits?

China has a centuries-old tradition called fuji. Two people hold a pen-like writing tool over a tray of sand or ashes. As the stylus moves, it forms Chinese characters interpreted as messages from gods or spirits.

During the Ming dynasty, the practice became so established that the Jiajing Emperor had a special fuji altar built inside the Forbidden City.
