Random Sand Fact

Ever heard of ant lions? They’re sneaky hunters that lure ants into sand traps in many locations as in Slovenia.

Ant-lions dig deep pits and hide at the bottom, waiting for unsuspecting prey as ants. When an ant falls into the pit and tries to escape, the ant-lion uses its head to bombard it with sand, causing the pit’s sides to collapse, and bringing the prey down. With poison-filled jaws, the ant-lion injects enzymes into its prey and sucks the insect dry. It’s a bug-eat-bug world out there.

Scientists in Slovenia have revealed that the shape of the pit varies depending on the structure of the sand.  Marvel at nature’s adaptations to life in the sand!
