Random Sand Fact

How can sand be used to catch prey?

Antlion larvae dig funnel-shaped traps in loose sand and hide at the bottom. When an ant steps over the edge, the sand starts to slide beneath its feet.

If the ant tries to climb out, the larva throws sand at it, setting even more grains in motion.

In Slovenia, researchers have studied how the sand itself affects the hunt. Grain size influences how the trap can be shaped and how stable it becomes, and antlions choose sand with grains suited to the job.
