In Zimbabwe, a person can carry sand in their name.
Among the Ndau people of south-eastern Zimbabwe, some names come directly from the ground. Majecha refers to sandy soil. Musani to river sand.
The names connect people to the landscape they come from — soil, rivers and places becoming part of identity. It is also where a person is one day expected to return, buried in the same ground their name came from.
A place can travel with you long after you leave it.
