Random Sand Fact

A day in 2005 in the Comoros Islands, the sky started raining black sand. Yes, you heard that right—black sand and ash!

The scene unfolded when Mount Karthala, an active yet usually peaceful volcano, showed a glimpse of its might. The 24-hour black sand shower was intense but surprisingly harmless.

Flash forward to a team of researchers working to pinpoint areas at risk during future eruptions by crafting miniature volcanoes in sandboxes. Creating eruptions that mirror real volcanoes. Not just any sand but meticulously chosen one, examined under a microscope to ensure the optimal sort and shape.

Picking the right grain of sand isn’t always a walk on the beach…
