Random Sand Fact
If you ever look for beach finds when strolling in sand, put Latvia on your to-go list.
All along Latvia’s beaches, tiny prehistoric treasures of amber wash ashore to be found in the sands. Referred to as “Baltic gold,” this fossilized resin originated from pine trees that thrived in the region approximately 45 million years ago. With its warm orange hue, amber is frequently used in jewelry.
It’s said that the best chance to find bigger pieces in the sands is after winter storms. If you head out: beware of mistaking phosphorus remains from WWII for amber. They look similar and can cause burns.
