Random Sand Fact

Humans are not the only ones to know that sand can purify water.

Some chimpanzees dig wells in sand close to open water and drink once the water is filtered there. This behavior has been observed in a national park in Uganda that directly borders Congo Kinshasa. As animal life does not worry about national borders, the behavior is likely the same on both sides.

Chimpanzees dig the holes by hand in sandy riverbeds, then drink the sand-filtered water collected by mouth or via leaves.
