Random Sand Fact
Can sand turn into gold – and give rise to a new calendar system?
According to a Nepali legend, more than a thousand years ago an astrologer predicted that sand from the place where two rivers meet in Kathmandu could turn into gold – if collected at exactly the right moment.
The king sent men to collect the sand. On their way back, they met the merchant Sankhadhar Sakhwa, who suspected there was something unusual about their load. He persuaded them to leave the sand with him and collect a new batch for the king.
By the next morning, according to the legend, Sakhwa’s sand had turned to gold. The sand collected later for the king had not.
